Genomic Sequencing Flashcards
What does genomic sequencing determine?
In genomic sequencing the sequence of nucleotide bases can be determined for individual genes and entire genomes
How are computer programmes used to identify base sequences?
Computer programs can be used to identify base sequences by looking for sequences similar to the known genes.
They types of species which had their genomes sequenced
Disease causing organisms (pathogens)
Pest species
Species that are important to the model organisms
What was observed when the sequence genomes were compared?
Many genes are highly conserved across different organisms which means that many genes are shared and they have changed very little over the course of evolution
What is phylogenetics?
Phylogenetics is the study of evolutionary history and relationships
What pieces of evidence determine the sequence of events in evolution?
Sequence Data
Fossil Evidence
What is sequence data used to study?
It’s used to study the evolutionary relatedness among groups of organisms
What is sequence divergence used to estimate?
Sequenced divergence (the number of differences in the DNA base sequence) is used to estimate time since lineages diverged.
What does a molecular clock use sequence data and fossil evidence for
It uses the information to establish the time since this divergence occurred.
