Genome Projects Flashcards
What is a genome?
All of the DNA in an organism
What happens in genome projects?
Scientists work to determine the complete genome sequence of an organism
What has improved technology allowed us to do?
Sequence the genomes of a variety of organisms
Gene sequencing methods only work on…?
Fragments of DNA
What is a proteome?
All the proteins an organism makes
What is a simple organism?
An organism that does not have much non-coding DNA meaning it is relatively easy to determine their proteome from their genome
What does being able to determine proteomes of bacteria and virus allow?
Pathogens to be monitored during outbreaks of disease
What is a complex organism?
An organism that contains large sections of non-coding DNA
What do complex regulatory genes do?
Determine when the genes that code for particular proteins should be turned on and off, making it more difficult to translate their genome into their proteome
How have sequencing methods been improved?
More cost-effective
Done on a large scale
Automated
