Amplifying DNA Fragments Flashcards
What is in vivo cloning?
Where the gene copies are made within a living organism. As the organism grows and divides, it replicates the DNA
What is in vitro cloning?
Where the gene copies are made outside of a living organism using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
What is a vector?
Something used to transfer DNA into a cell e.g. Plasmid, Bacteriophage
Describe the role of DNA ligase in in vivo cloning
Used to join the sticky ends of the DNA fragment containing the target gene and the vector DNA together
What is a host cell?
The cell the recombinant DNA/ target gene is transferred to
What is a transformed cell?
A vector containing the target gene
What are marker genes used for?
Identifying transformed cells e.g. fluorescence
