Genome Organization Flashcards
Genome
The entire set of genetic material for an organism
Bacteriophages
Viruses useing bacteria as hosts, aka phage
Cell lysis
The process of phages replicated in bacteria breaking their host cells open to escape
Virulent phages
Viruses that kill their hosts with cell lysis through the lytic cycle
Lysogenic cycle
The process of viruses inserting themselves into bacterial DNA to lay dormant prior to cell lysis
Prophages
Viruses that are dormant in bacteria
Temperate Phages
Viruses that are capable of undergoing the lysogenic cycle
Negative RNA virus
Must produce a complimentary strand before it can be translated
Positive RNA virus
Can be translated directly
Ambi-sense RNA virus
Have characteristics of both positive and negative RNA viruses
Retroviruses
RNA viruses that integrate into a host cell producing proviruses
Chromatosome
Fundamental unit of chromatin with a nucleosome (146 bp wrapped around 8 histones) the link and a H1
DNA supercoiling
A method of twisting DNA plasmids to reduce space, either positive supercoil from overrotating or negative supercoiling from underrotating
Topoisomerase
Proteins that make a cut to cause supercoiling.
