Genome Flashcards
What is a genome?
A complete set of genetic instructions
How is the genome packaged?
Chromosomes
Coiled linear strands of DNA
What are the two categories of DNA in the genome?
Unique and Repetitive
How often is unique DNA present in the genome?
Once or a few times
How much of the genome is Repetitive DNA?
60%
What is unique DNA?
Protein coding, functional RNA, and regulatory regions (promoters, enhancers, introns, etc).
How are unique sequences distributed?
Across all chromosomes
Some are denser than others
What is repetitive DNA?
Satellite DNA, transposable elements, and gene families
How is repetitive DNA distributed throughout the genome?
In two ways:
Interspersed
Tandemly repeated
What is unique and repetitive DNA?
Unique DNA is present only once or a few times in the genome and includes protein coding, functional RNA, and regulatory regions (promoters, enhancers, introns, etc). Repetitive DNA makes up 60% of the human genome and is the same equence present multiple times in the genome. Repetitive DNA is distriuted in the genome as highly repetitive, tandem repeats, and interspersed repeats
