What is bacterial vaginosis?
What are its associations?
Bacterial overgrowth, leading to vaginal discharge with an associated fishy odour
Associated with UPSI and menstruation
Amstel criteria for diagnosis of BV
3/4 required for diagnosis
Vaginal pH >4.5
Homogenous grey discharge
Whiff test - 10% potassium hydroxide produces fishy odour
Clue cells present on wet mount
Management of BV
Metronidazole (used for pregnancy)
Clindamycin
What is trichomoniasis?
Infection caused by trichomonas vaginalis, a flagellated protozoan
Transmission is usually sexual
Incubation period of around 7 days
Trichomoniasis symptoms in women
Can be asymptomatic
Classically profuse, frothy, yellow vaginal discharge
Can also be vulval irritation and dyspareunia
Strawberry cervix is rare sign
Trichomoniasis symptoms in men
Can cause non-gonococcal urethritis
Can be asymptomatic
Diagnosis of trichomoniasis
Direct microscopy and culture
Management of trichomoniasis
Metronidazole (PO state or BD for 7 days)
Follow up in one week
Screen sexual contacts

Obligate intracellular bacterium

Urethral discharge
