Genetics Chap 6 Flashcards
Autosomal inheritance
inheritance of traits based on the 22 normal chromosomes
Autosomal dominant
condition/trait that you have if you have even a single allele that’s dominant
Autosomal recessive
condition/trait that you have if you have both copies of the allele (homozygous recessive)
both copies present and trait is expressed
-one copy=carrier
Incomplete dominance
When two or more genes are partially expressed, so neither are complete in cancelling each other out and you end up with a weird mix
ex: white and red flower make pink
Codominance
They share the dominance
Two versions of an allele are expressed separately and show different results like a red and white cow
both alleles are dominance
Continuous variation
a range in variation of one trait because many genes are active. ex: There isn’t tall and short, there’s many heights in between
Polygenic trait
trait that is controlled by more than one gene
Sex-linked trait
a trait controlled by genes on the x and y chromosomes
male only has to inherit one to be affected, female needs both to be affected
Linked genes
genes that are on the same chromosome and tend to be passed down together
