Genetics Flashcards
An allele that is expressed no matter what the other allele is:
Dominant
An allele that is expressed only if you inherit two of that allele:
Recessive
Offspring or kids of parents:
F1 generation
Grandkids of original parents:
F2 generation
Egg or sperm cell formed as result of meiosis, haploid:
Gamete
Has 2 copies of the same allele for a given trait:
Homozygous
Has different alleles for any given trait:
Heterozygous
Neither allele is dominant, offspring are a blend (red flowers x blue flowers = purple flowers):
Incomplete dominance
A trait is controlled by more than one gene. The more dominant the allele, the severity in color etc is.
Polygenic
A single gene controls more than one character. If one dominant gene is present, dominant trait is expressed for all characters:
Pleiotrophy
Equal probability of each allele being produced in meiosis (50/50):
Law of segregation
Heterozygous x homozygous produces what proportion:
9:3:3:1
Neither allele is dominant, but alleles are expressed ex. red flowers x white flowers = red and white flowers)
codominance
Neither allele is dominant, but alleles are expressed (ex. red flowers x white flowers = red and white flowers)
