Genetics Flashcards
What do Mendel’s principles state?
The inheritance of biological characteristics is determined by individual units known as genes. Genes are passed from parents to their offspring.
In cases in which two or more forms (alleles) of the gene for a single trait exists, some forms of the gene may be dominant and others may be recessive.
In most sexually reproducing organisms, wash adult has two copies of each gene- one from each parent. These genes are segregated from each other when gametes are formed.
The alleles for different genes usually segregate independently or dependently of one another?
Independently
What does the principle of dominance state?
Some alleles are dominant and others are recessive
What can the principle of probability be used to do?
Predict the outcomes of genetic crosses
What can be used to predict and compare the genetic variations that will result from cross?
Punnett squares
When do alleles pair up again after segregation during the formation of gametes?
During fertilization
True or false: some alleles are neither dominant nor recessive.
True
True or false: many traits are controlled by multiple alleles or multiple genes.
True
Whose principles form the basis of the modern science of genetics?
Mendel
