Genetics Flashcards
karyotype
complete set of an indivudal’s chromosomes
G bands
technique used to produce thin alternating bands along the length of the entire chromosome to create a unique pattern allowing for identification
Fluorescent in SITU hybridization
a technique that uses DNA probes to detect specific complementary sequences on a chromosome
deletion
when a segment of DNA is deleted
duplication
segment of the DNA is duplicated
inversion
a segment of the DNA is turned 180 degrees
translocation
a segment of chromosome moves from one chromosome to a nonhomologous chromosome or to another place on the same chromosome
consequences of deletions
genetic information cannot be regenerated
result of a deletion
usually lethal recessive - when homozygous missing genes results in death. Can sometimes show a dominant as heterozygous due to gene imbalances
