Genetics Flashcards
Vocab, True or False, Punnett squares, Multiple Choice
What did Mendel do regarding true breeding?
He started his experiment with HOMOZYGOUS plants, meaning that when they cross pollinated all of the offspring would have the same heredity.
What is mating two varieties called?
hybridization
What is Monohybrid Cross?
A cross that only tracks a SINGLE trait.
Law of Segregation :
alleles separate into DIFFERENT gametes during meiosis.
Law of independent Assortment
Alleles segregate INDEPENDENTLY of one another and do not associate with one another (they do NOT get sent as a package)
What is Incomplete dominance? What happens during this?
Incomplete dominance is when one allele is not dominant over the other, resulting in a blend of the two. (Ex. Rr, R=red, r= white, therefore Rr in incomplete dominance would blend the two colors and create a new phenotype being Pink.
What is Homozygous?
Has two identical alleles for a specific trait. (Ex. AA & aa)
What is an Allele?
It is one of several forms/versions of a gene
What is Codominance?
Where both alleles contribute equally to the phenotype. (shows both traits equally)
What is Heterozygous?
Has two different Alleles. (ex. Aa )
