Genetics Flashcards
What is a monohybrid cross?
When plants are selectively bred for 1 characteristic.
What is a phenotype and a genotype?
A genotype is a combination of alleles inherited from the parents. The phenotype is the characteristic expressed by certain genotypes.
What are the 3 laws of genetics?
The law of dominance, segregation, and independent assortment
What is the law of segregation?
During gamete production, the homologous chromosomes carrying the gene are segregated (or separated) into different gametes.
What is the law of independent assortment?
When chromosomes are separated into gametes, they will be distributed randomly
What is an incomplete dominance?
When 2 alleles are dominant and are expressed to form a new 3rd phenotype.
(E.g. Purple flower and white flower make a pink flower)
What is co-dominance?
When 2 dominant alleles are expressed equally
(E.g. Roan cattle)
