Genetics Flashcards
Gene
The basic unit of heredity passed from parent to child;
A gene is a portion of DNA that determines a certain trait.
Alleles
An allele is a specific form of a gene. Alleles are responsible for the variations in which a given trait can be expressed
Dominant Alleles
requires that only one of the two alleles be present to express the trait.
Recessive Alleles
A recessive allele does not produce a trait at all when only one copy is present.
Phenotype
Phenotype refers to an individual’s observable traits, such as height, eye color and blood type.
Genotype
the genetic makeup of an organism
Homozygous Dominant
The definition of homozygous dominant is a genotype where an individual inherits two copies of a dominant gene (BB)
Heterozygous
If the two versions are different, you have a heterozygous genotype for that gene. For example, being heterozygous for hair color could mean you have one allele for red hair and one allele for brown hair. (Bb)
Homozygous recessive
when an organism carries two copies of the same recessive allele (bb)
