Genetics Flashcards
What is genetics?
the study of inheritance and variation.
What are variations?
Differences in characteristics of the same species.
What is a Continous variations?
A characteristic for which there is a wide range of Differences for the same characteristics .
Examples of continous variation?
Height, skin colour.
What is discontinous variations?
Differences between individuals of a species where the differences are qualitative (categoric)
Examples of discontinous variation?
Ability to roll the tongue, long hair in ears, blood groups.
Causes of discontinous variation?
Fertilisation, mutation, during cross over,
What is a gene?
Is a heritable factor that consists of a length dna and influences a specific characteristic.
What are alleles?
The various specific forms of a gene.
The father of genetics?
Greg mendell
Differences between alleles?
Alleles differ from each other by one or a few bases only.
Diploid cells refer to?
Diploid cells contain two complete sets of chromosomes. Eg somatic cells
Haploid cells refers to?
Cells that contain one complete chromosome set. Eg gametes
What is genome?
The total genetic information of an organisms.
Define heterozygous
