Genetic Variation Flashcards
What is genetic variation?
Describes naturally occurring genetic differences among individuals of the same species
What division promotes genetic variation?
Meiotic division and sexual reproduction
What are the main sources of genetic variation
-crossing over
-random assortment of -chromosomes
-random fusion of gametes
-mutation
_ independent segregation
What is crossing over?
exchange of genes between homologous chromosomes
What is random assortment?
chromosomes randomly organise themselves
What is independent segregation?
chromosomes separating into random daughter cells independent to each other
what is a genetic mutation?
A genetic mutation changes in formation in your cells, resulting in changes in the genetic sequence. This can cause an individual to experience symptoms of a genetic condition because the cells are doing a job they shouldn’t be.
what are genes responsible for?
making the proteins that tell the body what physical characteristics it should have
