DNA Probes
> Short-Single stranded piece of DNA
> Labelled using radioactive / fluorescent molecule
> Used to locate specific alleles of genes
> Patient DNA is removed and heated to make it single stranded
> Then mixed with DNA probes that are complementary ( so they bind ) and are located using X-rays or UV light
DNA Hybridisation
> DNA is heated to separate double helix
> Mixed with complementary sequences
> Once cooled, they anneal ( join )
> This technique is used as a medical diagnosis, to identify if someone has a copy of a particular allele
Why do we use Genetic Screening?
> Screening for a particular allele allows doctors to select medicines based on your genotype
> Because some drugs work more/less efficiently based on the genes that you have
