Genetic information 8.1 Flashcards
What is the genotype?
The genetic makeup of an organism
What is the phenotype?
The expression of genes and its interaction with the environment
What is a homozygote?
An individual where both of the alleles coding for a particular characteristic are identical
What is a heterozygote?
An individual where the two alleles coding for a particular characteristic are different
What does it mean when a phenotype shows dominance?
The phenotype is expressed whether the individual is homozygous for the characteristic or not
What does it mean when a phenotype is recessive?
The phenotype is only expressed when both alleles code for the recessive feature
What is codominance?
Both alleles contribute to the phenotype without mixing
What does it mean when a gene has multiple alleles?
There are more than two possible versions of an allele
What is an example of codominance?
Blood type groups
What is crossing over?
Where sections of DNA are exchanged between homologous chromosomes
What is independent assortment?
There are multiple variations and combinations of maternal and paternal chromosomes
