Other pathogenic agents 6.2.1-3 Flashcards
How does influenza overcome the immune response?
It regularly mutates
What is the mode of transmission for Influenza?
-Droplet Infection
-Direct contact
What is zoonotic infection?
A mutation occurs that produces a strain of flu that will cross the species barrier and infect humans
What is the mode of infection of influenza?
Infects the ciliated epithelial cells of the respiratory system
Death of the ciliated cells leads the respiratory tract vulnerable to infection
What is the pathogenic effect of influenza?
Includes fever, severe headaches with infection lasting for 5-7 days
What is the transmission of stem rust fungus?
Transmitted when spores from infected wheat plants are carried to young crops by the wind
What is the mode of infection of stem rust fungus?
Thread like hypha merges from the spore and penetrates one of the stomata of the leaves, giving the fungus a way into the tissues of the plant
What are two pathogenic effects of stem rust fungus?
-It absorbs nutrients from the plant
-Breaks the epidermis making it more difficult for the plant to control transpiration
What is plasmodium spp?
Parasites of the blood responsible for malaria
What is the transmission of plasmodium spp?
Feeds on the living tissues of its host, transmitted to a human host by a mosquito vector
What is the mode of infection of malaria?
Malaria parasite travels to the liver and invades the red blood cells, bursting out of the red blood cells
What is the pathogenic effect of malaria?
When they burst out of the red blood cells, they cause flu-like symptoms with long term damage to the liver
What is an endemic disease?
A disease that is constantly present in a particular country.
