Genetic Engineering -unit 1 Flashcards
Vehicle used to transfer genetic material to a target cell (e.g plasmid/virus)
Vector
A special molecule which is used to cut and stick genes and plasmids
Enzyme
A circular piece which is found inside a bacterial cell
Plasmid
A single celled organism which can be used in genetic engineering to make a product (e.g insulin)
Bacteria
A long section of DNA which codes for a particular characteristic
Gene
Protein made by the pancreas which controls blood sugar
Insulin
The process of altering an organism’s genetic code. Often involves taking a gene from one organism and inserting into a different organism
Genetic engineering
A chemical made by the pituitary gland which controls growth and development particularly in children
Human growth hormone
Organ of the body which produces enzymes for digestion and the hormone insulin
Pancreas
A blood clotting factor made through genetic engineering given to patients with haemophilia
Factor VIII
