Genetic Engineering Flashcards
What does Genetic Engineering use?
Enzymes to cut and paste genes.
What is a useful gene cut from?
One organisms chromosome - using enzymes.
Why do genetically modified crops have their genes modified?
So they are resistant to viruses, insects or herbicides.
What have sheep been genetically engineered to produce?
Substances, like drugs in their milk - treat human diseases.
What are genetic disorders caused by?
Faulty genes - gene therapy.
What do people say about growing genetically modified crops?
Affect the number of weeds and flowers that live in and around the crops - reducing farmland biodiversity.
What are peoples concerns about transplanted genes?
They might get out into the natural environment - creating a new ‘superweed’.
What can Genetically Modified crops increase?
The yield of a crop, making more food.
