Cloning Flashcards
How can plants be cloned?
By Cuttings and Tissue Culture.
Where do gardeners take cuttings from and why?
Good parent plants to produce genetically identical copies.
Advantages of cutting?
Quick & Cheap.
What is tissue culture?
Plant cells put into growth medium with hormones - grow into new plants - clones of parent.
Advantages of tissue culture?
Quick, very little space, can be grown all year.
How can you make animal clones?
Embryo Transplants.
Where are the cells for animal cloning taken from?
Prize bull and Prize cow.
What are the sperm used for in animal cloning?
Artificially fertilise an egg cell.
Where do the cloned embryos get planted?
Other cows.
What’s another way to make a clone?
Adult cell cloning.
What does adult cell cloning involve?
Unfertilised egg cell - removing its genetic material - set of chromosomes from adult body cell inserted into empty egg cell.
In adult cell cloning, what is the egg stimulated by?
An electric shock - makes it divide.
