Genetic Engenering Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic engineering?
A
It is the process of altering the DNA in an organism and changing a set of instructions.
2
Q
What is genetic engineering used for
A
It can be used to make medicine
Eg. Insulin for diabetes
Clothing factors
Human growth hormone
3
Q
What are the stages of genetic engineering?
(Stage 1)
A
- DNA with desired gene ( E.G. insulin) is located
4
Q
Stage 2
A
Cut out the gene with an enzyme
5
Q
Stage 3
A
Cut open a plasmid with an enzyme
6
Q
Stage 4
A
Put the gene into the plasmid
7
Q
Stage 5
A
Put the plasmid back into the bacterial cell
8
Q
Stage 6
A
Bacteria will then reproduce and make new substances (E.g. insulin) which will then be collected
9
Q
Name 2 advantage and disadvantages
A
Advantage- pest and disease don’t eat crops
- longer shelf life
- boosts nutrition
Disadvantage - reduce diversity
- development of new issues
- the effects are unknown
