Enzymes Flashcards
What does the catalyst do
- Speeds up reactions
- It is not used up by reactions
- Lowers the energy needed for a reaction to happen ( which means a lower temperature)
What is an enzyme
• An enzyme is a biological catalyst
Where does the substrate attach to the enzyme?
The active site
Why are enzymes described as Specific?
Because it fits into the substrate perfectly ( lock and key)
Name the two types of enzyme reactions
Synthesis & degradation
Give an example of an enzyme and it’s substrate
Pippius & protein
What two things can affect the rate of an enzyme reaction?
The temperature and ph
What happens if enzymes are denatured?
This can happen when an enzyme becomes damaged due to the change in temp or ph
Name some enzyme functions?
- depredation reaction
- braking larger molecules in to smaller prices
- synthesis reactions
- Joining smaller molecules to make larger ones
Give some examples
(Oxygen + water = products)
Protein -pepsin-> polypeptides (PPP)
Starch-Amylase-> Maltase (SAM)
The order of enzymes?…
- DNA codes for protein
- Protein folds up in a specific way to make an enzyme
- Enzymes speed up reactions
What does optimum mean?
It is used to describe the condition of a factor at which an enzyme works best at
