What is meant by diploid?

2 of each chromosome (2n) e.g. body cells

What is meant by Haploid ?
A
Only one chromosome (n) e.g. gametes

What is meant by homologous chromosomes?
A
Matching pair of maternal and paternal chromosomes

What is fertilization?
A
A haploid sperm fuses with a haploid egg, making a cell with a normal diploid number of chromosomes.

What is random fertilization?
A
Any sperm can fertilize any egg. This therefore produces zygotes with different combinations of chromosomes to both parents.
