Genesis And Creation Arguments Flashcards
What do conservatives believe?
They believe the story of creation outlines the way the world was made, but we don’t need to obsess over factual details. A day to god may not mean a day to us and it may symbolise a period.
What do fundamentalists believe?
They believe in the literal and factual words of the bible and believe everything happened exactly as described.
What do liberals believe?
They believe the story is poetic and god has created everything through creating order out of chaos and this is expressed through a myth.
What is the cosmological argument?
Sir Thomas Aquinas argued nothing comes from nothing and the universe exists therefore the universe came from nothing. There must be something that made the universe happen, and that something is god.
Criticisms of the cosmological argument.
Perhaps the universe had no beginning.
Who made god?
What is the butterfly effect?
One tiny event can set a whole series of events in motion, for example a butterfly’s wings can create a tiny change in the atmosphere which may change the path of a tornado.
What is the design argument?
The world has careful, neat and deliberate patterns in it which do not happen randomly. They must have a designer to create these patterns. Many people believe this designer is god. William Paley used a watch to explain this by comparing a watch to the world. If he saw a watch on the floor, he would assume the watch had a designer as all the parts work together to make movement. If the world is a machine, the designer is god.
