Genes and Inheritance Flashcards
Gamete
Sex cells (men - sperm, women - egg)
Fertilization
When sperm and egg cell fuses
gestation
Development of foetus until birth. The period of time where the fertilised egg fully develops into a foetus.
inheritence
passing on of DNA
gene
gene is small section of a chromosome.
The instructions that code for a certain protein,
Alleles are small variations of genes
chromosome
Chromosomes are long threads of DNA. 46 in each nucleus of a cell except gametes
genetic variation
Genetic variation is when random mutations are passed down from parent to child. The mutations that cause genetic variation occur in the DNA.
Genetic variation is inherited.
desired characters
Variations that help organisms survive are called desired characteristics.
Why animals have variation
Animals within the same species vary from one another.
This is because of their slightly different genes.
For example, not all cheetahs can run at the same speed. Some are slightly faster and some are slower than others.
This is to do with the genes that control muscles size, aerodynamic head shape and so on.
