Q

How does a generator work?

A

AC is created. A turbine causes the coil of wire to rotate in a uniform magnetic field inducing a voltage. The current is induced as a result. As the wire rotates, the current reverses to induce an alternating current which then supplies electricity for components. This is used in power stations. Slip rings connect the coil to the external circuit.

Q

How does a motor work?

A

The magnetic fields of the magnets and coil interact to induce a force 90 degrees to the current and field lines, causing rotation. The current used is DC and the split ring commutator allows for constant movement, and so rotation through switching the wires with the contacts so that the current can reverse, so the coil can continue to rotate.
