What is the first phase of the menstrual cycle? What is occurring?
Follicular phase, occurring in the ovary. Egg (ovum) matures from increasing levels of FSH
What is occurring at the same time as the follicular phase?
Proliferative phase, occurring in the uterus. Uterus proliferates due to increasing levels of estrogen
Once there is a surge in FSH/LH and the oocyte is extruded from the follicle, what stage are we in?
Ovulation phase
What occurs after ovulation in the ovary?
Luteal phase
The Graafian follicle has now become the corpus luteum after releasing the oocyte – causing a rise in progesterone.
What occurs after ovulation in the uterus?
Secretory phase – high progesterone levels calm the endometrium making the uterine environment conductive to implantation
What is the second phase of the menstrual cycle?
luteal phase
If a menstral cycle is greater than 35 days, what is it?
Oligomenorrhea
If a menstural cycle is less that 21 days, what is it?
Polymenorrhea

What does dyspareunia mean? What is it normally caused by?
Pain with sex. Common in post-menopausal women & after giving birth
What is the most common cause of excess androgen and hirsutism?
PCOS
