General Senses Flashcards
Stimulus
first event in sensation detection
Transduction
receptor receives stimulus and changes it into a receptor potential (and possibly an AP)
Conduction
AP along sensory neuron to CNS
Integration
within CNS, interpretation/awareness of sensation
Projection
brain refers sensations to their learned point of origin
Adaptation
stimulus is the same, but sensitivity changes
Afterimage
stimulus is gone, but sensitivity still present
Modality
each receptor is only sensitive to its own stimulus
Receptive field
stimulus only able to stimulate receptor within a certain range
Mechanoreceptors (7)
- free nerve ending
- type I Cutaneous Mechanoreceptor (tactile disc)
- Corpuscle of touch (Meissner corpuscle)
- type II cutaneous mechanoreceptor (ruffini corpuscle)
- hair root plexus
- lamellated (pacinian) corpuscle
- Meissner corpuscle
Free Nerve Ending
senses pain, itch, tickle, cold, and warmth
type I cutaneous mechanoreceptor (tactile disc)
senses find touch and pressure
type II cutaneous mechanoreceptor (Ruffini corpuscle)
sense crude touch and stretching of skin
corpuscle of touch (meissner corpuscle)
senses find touch, pressure, and slow vibration
hair root plexus
senses crude touch
