Negative Sentence Structure

The basic French negation is composed of two elements: NE and PAS

NE and PAS circle the verb and the negative sentence structure is:

subjet + NE + verb + PAS + oject (Je ne bois pas de café)

  • The negation word can be different: ne…pas, ne…plus, ne…rien, etc (not, not…anymore, not…anyone)
  • The articles DU, DE LA, DES becomes DE at the negative form

(Je bois du café/Je ne bois pas de café)

Q

Plural names - A few names of regions are plural. Most plural regions end in an S, but not all regions ending in an S are plural (le Laos, L’Arkansas)… So with plural regions, here is the rule Les États-Unis, les Maldives, les Pays-Bas, Les Philippines…

AUX + Plural region
Je vais aux États-Unis, aux Maldives = I’m going to the US
Je suis aux États-Unis, aux Maldives = I’m in the Maldives

DES + Plural region
Je viens des États-Unis = I am from the US

Q

Cities are usually not introduced by any article, and are usually feminine.
Paris est belle (because here Paris refers to “la ville de Paris”).

But some cities include an article in their name – Le Havre, le Caire, La Paz, Les Andelys… For these, usually the article contracts with the à, becoming au, du etc…
