What is the dose and duration of metronidazole you can prescribe for NUP?
Metronidazole 200mg x3 daily for 3 days
How would you manage a patient with NUP?
- Debridement +/- LA
- Prescribe hydrogen peroxide mouthwash +/- chlorhexidine mouthwash
- Prescribe antibiotics: 3 day course 200mg metronidazole x3 daily or amoxycillin 250 mg x3 daily for 5 days
- Analgesia
- OHI
How do BPE codes change in paeds patients of different age?
0-7 = No BPE
7-12 = BPE 0/1/2 (if co-operative!)
12+ = all codes
What would you expect to see in successful periodontal treatment?
- Reduction in pocket depth
- Decreased bleeding on probing
- Recession/loss of swelling
- Reduced calculus and plaque
- Reduction in mobility
- Regain lost clinical attachment
Following successful periodontal therapy when should you re-assess probing depth? Why?
Repair of connective tissue occurs for 4 -8 weeks therefore do not re-evaluate PD until 8 weeks
What 3 components make up biological width?
Sulcus Epithelium
Junctional Epithelium
Connective Tissue
Following successful periodontal therapy how long does it take for the junctional epithelium to grow back?
Approx 2 week
What teeth are most commonly affected in juvenile periodontitis?
Incisors and first permanent molars as these are the first to erupt
What type of microrganisms are found in supragingival plaque? (3)

What type of microrganisms are found in subgingival plaque? (3)
Proteolytic bacteria
Gram-negative
Anaerobic bacteria
