General Parsitology Info Flashcards
When attempting to identify a parasite, what are vital bits of information require?
Host and site are vital this allows you to use a Host-parasite checklist and key.
What is the Diagnostic stage?
The stage when the parasite leaves it’s host, usually in egg, cyst or larvae form. Often in faeces, blood or urine.
What does Virulence mean?
Reduction in the hosts fitness (which is induced by the parasite)
What does Resistance mean
Reduction in the parasites fitness (this reduction is directly induced (caused) by the host)
What does Infectivity mean
Capability of the parasite to enter the host
What does infectibility mean?
Propensity for host to be infected
What does Pathogenicity mean
Capability of parasite to produce clinical disease
What does Susceptibility mean?
Propensity for host to exhibit clinical disease (Tolerance =/Susceptibility)
What is a Direct Life Cycle?
What is an indirect life cycle?
Direct Life Cycle only involves one host where an indirect life cycle involves 2 or more hosts.
What is the definitive host?
Host in which the parasite attains sexual maturity.
What is a Vector?
Arthropod carrier of infective stage from one host to another.
What is a reservoir host?
An alternative host, usually one which does not suffer clinical disease, but can act as a source of infection for other hosts.
What is an accidental host?
Host which does not normally harbour the parasite and in which the parasite cannot complete its life cycle
What’s the difference between an intermediate host and a paratenic host?
An intermediate host is an additional obligatory host where a paratenic host is non obligatory.
