General Paper 2 Quick-fire questions Flashcards
Describe a biochemical test to determine if a substance contained proteins
Biuret test:
- Add Biuret solution
- Positive result = LILAC
Describe a biochemical test to determine the presence of lipids
Emulsion test:
- Add ethanol to the sample
- Shake
- Add water (to ensure all lipids have dissolved)
- Shake
- Positive result = MILKY WHITE
Describe a biochemical test to test the presence of starch in a sample
- Add Iodine solution
2. Positive result= BLUE/BLACK
Describe a biochemical test to determine the presence of reducing sugars
Benedict test:
- Add Benedict’s solution to sample
- Heat
- Positive result = ORANGE/BRICK RED
Describe a biochemical test to determine presence of non-reducing sugars
- Add Hydrochloric acid and heat to break bonds
- Neutralise using an alkali
- Add Benedict’s solution to sample
- Heat
- Positive result = ORANGE/BRICK RED
Explain why ATP is better than glucose as an immediate energy source for cell metabolism
- Only takes a single reaction to release the energy which is much quicker than glucose
- Releases small, manageable amounts at a time
- Cannot pass out of cells
What does the Standard Deviation show?
- Shows spread around the mean
- If overlap occurs = no significant difference
- so therefore there is less variability
Explain why a logarithmic scale (Log-10) was used
Makes it easier to plot large ranges in values on a graph
What is the equation for Respiration?
C6H12O6 + 602 > 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy
What is the equation for Photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H20 + Energy > C6H12O6 +6o2
A gene that slows the rate of cell division by producing proteins that stop cells dividing or cause them to self-destruct
Tumour-suppressor gene
The response of light to a directional stimulus
Tropism
A type of RNA that carries the amino acids used to make proteins
tRNA
