General Nutrition Recommendations for Lactation Flashcards
Does a lactating individual require more micronutrients?
generally not, although they require more calories
What nutrients might become depleted after anorexia nervosa?
omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, chromium, copper, iodine
General recommendations for nutrients to INCREASE during pregnancy and lactation
- protein
- omega-3 fatty acids
- water
- vitamin b12 (esp if vegan)
- vitamin A, vitamin C, chromium, copper, iodine (quantities required nearly double in pregnancy and lactation of these micronutrients)
What prenatal vitamins are universally supported by evidence?
folic acid and iron supplementation
What is the approx extra energy requirement needed per day during lactation?
500 calories (supplied from both increased food intake and existing fat stores)
What nutrition needs should be considered for someone who is tandem nursing?
extra 500 cal/day and 500mg omega-3 supplement (if unable to meet with dietary)
What specific nutrition needs apply to lactation in adolescence?
Adolescent girls may require dietician advice for healthy development of both mom and baby. Tend to eat few fruits/vegetables, counsel on importance of well rounded diet. Calcium absorption is higher in this population when consuming inulin-rich foods.
Delayed lactogenesis II is a risk factor in which maternal condition?
Maternal diabetes (gestational or otherwise)
What special needs should be considered in lactating patients who have recently undergone bariatric surgery?
- possible reduced nutrient absorption
- risk of delayed lactogenesis II
- excess skin/pendulous breasts, may need assistance with positioning
Specific nutritional considerations for breastfeeding multiples
- Minimum 1.8L water daily
- Increase by 500-600 calories per infant
- Do not increase micronutrient supplementation d/t risk of toxicity
Does maternal malnutrition lead to poor quality milk?
No. If breastfeeding is unrestricted, even women with mild-moderate malnutrition can produce sufficient milk.
