General Math Information Flashcards
Describe the order of operations.
PEMDAS:
- Parentheses
- Exponents
- Multiplication and division as they occur left to right.
- Addition and subtraction as they occur left to right.
What is the number in front of a variable called?
The coefficient. e.g. 5x, coefficient is 5.
What is a monomial?
It’s an expression with only one term, e.g. 5x is a monomial.
What is a binomial?
An expression with two terms, e.g. 5x + 7y.
What is a trinomial?
An expression with two terms, e.g. 5x+7y+10z
What is a polynomial?
An expression with more than three terms.
What does FOIL stand for? What is it used for?
FOIL stands for First, Outer, Inner, Last. It is used to multiply 4 terms at a time, e.g. (x+3)(x-3). First- (x)(x)=x^2, Outer (-3)(x)=-3x, Inner (3)(x)=3x, Last (-3)(3)=-9.
What does distribute mean?
Distribute means multiply one term by all the other terms. e.g. 5(x+y) distributed is 5x+5y.
What does it mean to combine like terms?
Shorten an expression by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing as much as possible. e.g. 5x-7x+14x-3y+4x= 16x-3y.
(x+12)^2=
x^2+24x+144
How do you find the perimeter of a shape?
Add the lengths of each side together.
What is the area of a shape?
The area is how much space is inside of a shape. You can find the area of a square or rectangle by multiplying length x width.
What does (x+9)^2 mean?
It means (x+9)(x+9) - use FOIL to solve.
What are the steps to solve a word problem?
- Read the whole problem
- Figure out what they are asking for.
- Make a key of all your information.
- Combine the information from your key into an equation.
•Often, you’ll have multiple undefined values.
-One or more values will be modified. E.g. Sam is 5 in shorter than Sally. Sam’s height is being modified using Sally’s height.
-One value won’t have much info. This value is ‘x’. Sally would be x. - Solve the equation.
- Return to the key you wrote. Plug in your ‘x’ value to find the piece of information the question is asking for. That’s your answer!
What is an arithmetic pattern?
A pattern that can be found in a table of related information. The pattern will usually be consistent addition or subtraction of the same number.
