Fractions, Decimals, Percentages Flashcards
How do you multiply fractions?
Multiply straight across the top and bottom- the numerators are multiplied and then the denominators are multiplied.
What must you have to add or subtract fractions?
A common denominator.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the fraction you’re dividing by and multiply the two fractions.
What is the least common denominator for 6 and 8?
- 8•3=24, 6•4=24.
Name 3 ways to reduce fractions.
- Do the numerator and denominator have a factor in common? Divide by that factor.
- Does the numerator divide evenly into the denominator? Divide by the numerator.
- Are the numerator and denominator both even numbers? Divide by 2.
What are 3 ways to find a common denominator?
Try the methods in this order only!!
- If the smaller denominator divides evenly into the larger one, the larger denominator will be your common denominator.
- Can you find a multiple the denominators have in common? E.g. 6 and 4 have the common multiple 12. 6•2=12, 3•4=12.
- If the first 2 methods fail, multiply the denominators. E.g. 5 and 7 have a lowest common denominator of 5•7=35.
How can you convert 1/8 into a decimal?
Do long division with 1 divided by 8. You will have to add a decimal point- 1.00 divided by 8.
How do you solve for (4/5)x?
First, multiply both sides by 5 to get rid of the denominator. Then, divide both sides by 4 to get rid of the numerator.
What is a proper fraction?
Proper fractions cannot be reduced and the numerator is smaller than the denominator.
What is an improper fraction?
An improper fraction has a larger numerator than denominator.
What is a mixed fraction?
A fraction with a whole number and a fraction, e.g. 5 3/4.
How do you convert an improper fraction to a mixed fraction?
Divide the numerator by the denominator, e.g. 55/4 means 55 divided by 4.
How do you convert a mixed fraction to an improper fraction?
Multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction. Add the number you got to the numerator and that’s your mixed fraction. e.g. 5 3/4, 5*4=20, 20+3=23 so your improper fraction is 23/4.
When is it helpful to have improper fractions?
When multiplying or dividing fractions it’s easier to have improper fractions.
What’s the easiest way to convert a fraction to a decimal?
If it has a denominator of 10, 100, 1000, etc. it’s easy to convert because that’s how the decimal places work. So if you have a denominator of 5, multiply your fraction by 2/2 to get a denominator of 10.
