Lead’s Responsibilites
- Perform smooth/consistent, stable and predictable changes in power, heading and altitude.
- Keep the flight within the proper operating area and comply with course rules
- Keep the flight clear of clouds and other aircraft
- Always know where wing is
- Execute the briefed formation sequence utilizing proper visual and radio communications
Wing’s Responsibility
- Keep lead in sight and maintain flight path deconfliction
- Maintain proper position
- Comply with lead’s signals and give timely response
- Provide mutual support - BPT to assume lead at any time - back up lead with navigation, communication, etc.

Steps for a lead change
New lead: Maintain what you have. Look at instruments. New wing passes the 3/9 set TCAS -On, Transponder-Active, Ops Check
New Wing: Look at lead, wing dip, lower, pull power, lateral, pitot
When you hear “traffic traffic”
TCAS - off, Transponder - STBY, Ops check
How should you set up for the BR?
Break up wind so you can do your turns while being pushed through entire block.
Max AOB lead should use
30 AOB
How many turns ahead do you need to think about as Lead?
1 turn ahead for area management
Reasons for Underrun during Rendezvous
- Wing develops an excessive closure rate
- Wing becomes excessively Acute
- Wing gets Acute in close to Lead and is too close to make angle of bank corrections
- Wing feels uncomfortable and in their judgement an unsafe situation has developed
- Anytime directed by the Formation Lead
