What is mental disorder and what is not according to DSM 5?
MD = 1) Occurs within the individual; 2) Clinically significant difficulties in thinking, feeling and; behaving; 3) Involves dysfunction in processes that support mental functioning
NOT MD = 1) Culturally specific reaction to an event; 2) Not primarily a result of social deviance or conflict with society
What are the main characteristics of mental disorders?
1) Personal behavior causing significant distress. CAVEAT–> Not all disorders cause distress (e.g. antisocial personality disorders) and not all distress are mental disorders (e.g. hunger experienced during religious fasting).
2) Violation of social norms. A little broad and narrow as social norms vary across cultures and ethnic groups.
3) Presence of disability and dysfunction. CAVEAT–> Not all mental disorders involve disabilities and not all disabilities are mental disorders
What are the characteristics of stigma?
1) Distinguishing label is applied
2) Label refers to undesirable attributes
3) People with label are seen as different
4) People with label are discriminated against.
What is stigma?
Destructive beliefs and attitudes held by a society that are ascribed to groups considered different in some way
