General Definitions Flashcards
What is chemistry?
the study of matter and the changes it undergoes
What is matter?
anything that occupies space and has mass
What is a substance?
form of matter that has a definite (constant) composition and distinct properties
What is a mixture?
combination of two or more substances in which the substances retain their distinct identities. There are two types: homgeneous and heterogeneous; homo = mixture is uniform; hetero = mixture is not uniform.
What is an element?
substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means
What is a compound?
substance composed of atoms of two or more elements chemically united in fixed properties
What is mass?
quantity of matter in a given sample of substance
What is intensive property?
measurement does not depend on how much matter is being considered
What are two subtypes of intensive property?
- Density - is an intensive property because it is the mass of an object divide by its volume
- Temperature - property is not additive like mass, length and volume
What is molarity?
M, molarity is a very common
way of expressing the concentration of a solution.
