Basic Atomic Structure Flashcards
1
Q
What is an atom?
A
basic unit of an element that can enter into chemical combination
2
Q
Define electron, proton, neutron, and nucleaus. State charge.
A
- Electrons: negatively charged particles
- Nucleus: dense central core of an atom
- Protons: positively charged particles in the nucleus
- Neutrons: electrically neutral particles having a mass slightly greater than that of protons
3
Q
What is an atomic number?
A
number of protons in the nucleus of each atom of an element
4
Q
What is a mass number? aka atomic mass?
A
total number of neutrons and protons present in the nucleus of an atom of an element. It is expressed in atomic mass units, a.k.a amu.
5
Q
What is an isotope?
A
atoms that have the same atomic number but different mass numbers
