General Definitions Flashcards
Alternation of Generations
Alternating phases in a plants life cycle that differ in both chromosome number and type of reproductive cell
Sporophyte (2N)
In alternation of generations, the plant in which meiosis occurs and which thus produces meiospores
Gametophyte (N)
In alternation of generations, the gamete producing plant
Spore (N)
A reproductive cell
Sporangium (2N)
Spore Case
Gametangium (N)
Cell or multicellular structure in which gametes are formed
Antheridium (N)
Multicellular sperm-producing gametangium consisting of spermatogenous tissue and a sterile jacket of cells
~type of gametangium
Archegonium(N)
Multicellular egg bearing gametangium with a jacket of sterile cells
~type of gametangium
Oogamous
one gamete is larger and non-motile (egg) the other is smaller and motile (sperm)
Zygotic Meiosis
Haploid phase dominates with only a short diploid phrase
Gametic Meiosis
Diploid phase dominates as zygote develops as 2N. Very short haploid phase
Isomorphic Generations
Equal diploid and haploid phases
Sporic Meiosis
includes a bit of haploid and diploid - in general the alternation of generations
