What is bone cancer?
An uncommon type of cancer that begins when cells in the bone start to grow out of control.
What are the two main classifications of bone tumors?
Primary bone sarcomas and secondary bone sarcomas (metastasis).
Define primary bone sarcomas.
Cancers that start in the bone and are not very common.
What are sarcomas?
Cancers that start in bone, muscle, fibrous tissue, blood vessels, fat tissue, and can develop anywhere in the body.
What are secondary bone sarcomas?
Cancers that have spread to the bones from another organ, known as bone metastasis.
Which types of advanced cancer commonly lead to bone metastasis?
- Breast cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Lung cancer
How do cancer cells in the bone appear under a microscope?
They look like the cancer cells in the organ they originated from.
From which embryologic origin do bone tumors arise?
The mesoderm, primitive mesenchyme, or ectoderm cells.
