General biological explanation evaluation Flashcards
Simply evaluate the biological explanations of schizophrenia
Reductionist
Deterministic (good and bad)
An interactionist approach might be more appropriate
Explain why the biological explanations are reductionist
They reduce schizophrenia down to a simple cause - a gene. Where in realisty schizophrenia is likely to be caused by an interaction between nature and nurture meaning the explanation is too simplistic
Explain why the biological explanations are deterministic - and explain both sides
They are deterministic as they say we are determined by genes/a neurotransmitter/parts of our brain which means we have no free will
However this is a strength as it means we can attempt to predict behaviour
Explain why an interactionist approach might be more appropriate
An interactionist approach might fully explain such a complex condition
-the diathesis-stress model says that a person might be biologically predisposed to develop the disorder, but environmental factors are required to trigger off this predisposition
