Q

Explain ‘✔Support for the effectiveness - Jauhar’

A

There is support for the benefit of CBT from Jauhar et al (2014) who reviewed the results of 34 studies for schizophrenia and concluded that CBT had a significant effect on both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia - which provides support for the effectiveness of CBT

Q

Explain ‘✘Problem studies because they combine the therapy with drugs’

A

There is a problem with using studies as evidence for the effectiveness of CBT as most studies have included a combination of CBT with drug therapy, meaning it has been difficult to assess the effectiveness of CBT independent of antipsychotic medication

Q

Explain ‘✔CBT is an active treatment’

A

CBT is an active treatment as the patient plays an active role in their recovery - they are encourages to develop their own solutions to their current thoughts and bhaviour and to develop coping strategies to help them manage their condition in the future
This is a strength as it means the patient is given control over their own condition and is more liekly to be able to help themselves - unlike drug treatment where the patient passively takes the drug and waits for the effect

Q

Explain ‘✘It is not effective in all stages of the disorder’

A

During the initial acute phase, self-reflection is not particularly apropriate as the patient is too highly disturbed - suggesting that CBT is not suitable for all schizophrenic patients and the effectiveness is dependent on the stage of the disorder

Q

Explain ‘✘Lack of avaliability to people’

A

Around onloy 1 in 10 out of those who would benefit from the treatment would actually get access to it, as it is very expensive and with the NHS struggling for money it is not given very often

Q

Explain ‘✘Ethical issues’

A

CBT involves challenging a persons paranoia meaning this interferes with a persons freedom of thought, it is argues that the therapist is harming the patient in deciding what thoughts are unacceptable and then changing them

Q

Explain ‘✘It doesn’t actually cure schizophrenia’

A

CBT is good in the sense that it is effective and can improve the quality of life for patients by helping them develop coping strategies for the syptoms rather than treating them, however the failiure to cure schizophrenia can be seen as a weakness
