What is the goal of CBT?
To adjust the thinking patterns and alter innapropriate beliefs - it challenges irrational thoughts - as delusions in schizophrenia are the result of faulty interpretations of events
How does CBT work?
Anti-psychotics are usually given first (to reduce psychotic thoughts so CBT can be more effective)
What are the stages of CBT? (name)
- Identification of belief
- Challenge belief
- Developing alternative explanations
- The behavioural component
Explain challenging the belief
They’re encouraged to think back when their beliefs first started to try and help them gain a better understanding of how the symptoms might have developed.
Explain developing an alternative explanation
The therapist lets the patient develop their own explanations, ideally looking for alternative ones or coping strategies that are already present in the patients mind
Explain the behavioural component
Where patients may also be set behavioural assingments to improve their general level of functioning
eg they may be asked to trial a coping strategy they have developed to help them cope with the stress of going outside
