General Bio Flashcards
Homeostasis
Processes that keep the inside of an organism approximately the same all the time (temperature, water levels, nutrient levels, gas levels, etc.
Tissue
Group of similar cells working together
Epithelial Tissue
Groups of cells working together to protect the tissues beneath
Nervous tissue
groups of cells that send electrical signals throughout the body
Muscle tissue
groups of cells that contract and relax to produce movement (ex. cardiac muscle cell, skeletal muscle cell, and smooth muscle cell)
Connective Tissue
Groups of cells that perform many functions including joining, insulating, protecting, cushioning, and supporting
Organ
2 or more tissues working together to perform a particular function
Organ system
Group of organs working together to perform a particular function (human respiratory system)
Organisms
maintain homeostasis in order to ensure that tissues and organs work at their optimal level
Tissues
Form organs, which form organ systems
How many organ systems in humans and name them?
11 organ systems: integumentary, muscular, skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, nervous, digestive, lymphatic, and endocrine
Long, straight tube connecting your throat and stomach
esophagus
Microscopic filters located in the kidneys
Nephrons
Large, reddish brown organ that helps with digestion
Liver
Green liquid used in fat digestion
Bile
