General Flashcards
What is Cardiomyopathy?
heterogeneous group of diseases
mechanical and/or electrical dysfunction of the heart
2 ways of classifying cardiomyopathy
function structure
Functional classification:
3 types
- dilated
- hypertrophic
- restrictive
Functional classification:
dilated cardiomyopathy
impaired contractility and systolic function
Functional classification:
hypertropic cardiomyopathy
impaired compliance and diastolic function
Functional classification:
restrictive cardiomyopathy
impaired compliance and diastolic function
Structural classification:
12 types
ischemic hypertensive alcoholic Adriamycin peripartum sarcoid hypothyroid muscular dystrophy hemochromatosis hypertrophic amyloid idiopathic
(Structural) types of cardiomyopathy that can present as either:
- dilated cardiomyopathy w/ impaired systolic function OR
- restrictive cardiomyopathy with impaired diastolic function
HTN
sarcoid
hemochromatosis
amyloid
With decompensation,
cardiomyopathy that had features of:
1. functionally hypertrophic OR
2. restrictive
can begin to have features of dilated
(For instance, a patient whose problem was syncope due to arrhythmias may come to have dyspnea and other symptoms of heart failure)
Genetic differences can..
cause some family members to have hypertrophy,
while other members have dilatation
Presentation of cardiomyopathies usually either…
- HF
OR
- arrhythmias
Cardiomyopathies w/ HF presentation
idiopathic dilated
[amyloidosis]
[hypertrophic]
Cardiomyopathies w/ arrhythmia presentation
sarcoidosis
[amyloidosis]
[hypertrophic]
