General Flashcards
Describe the knee joint
Largest synovial joint of the body
Joint surfaces are shallow in the anatomical position
Knee joint stability achieved by ligaments and major muscles
Medial and lateral compartments within the knee
Describe the patella
Triangular
Base is roughened for attachments of quadriceps femoris
Apex is roughened for attachment of ligamentum patellae
Posteriorly has smooth medial and lateral facets to articulate with medial and lateral condyles of the femur
Describe the femur
Has medial and lateral supracondylar lines
Has medial and lateral condyles and epicondyles
Has adductor tubercle
Describe the tibia
Transmits weight from femur to foot
Tibial plateau articulates with femoral condyles
Two menisci provide depth for femoral condyles
Centre of tibial plateau provides attachment for acl and pcl
Describe the fibula
Carries no weight
Contributes to leg and ankle stability
Provides attachment for muscles
Head of fibula articulates with lateral condyle of tibia
Shaft is slender
Distal end is flattened to form the lateral malleolus
Describe the joint capsule of the knee
Anteriorly blends with patella and quadricep insertions
Medially blends with mcl and medial meniscus
Laterally blends with iliotibial band
Describe the tibio femoral joint
Synovial bicondylar joint
Between femoral condyles and Tibial plateau
Enables flexion extension medial rotation and lateral rotation
