General Flashcards
What is serial processing
Processing in which one process is completed before the next one starts
What is parallel processing?
Processing in which two or more cognitive process occur at the same time
What is bottom up processing?
Processing that is directly influenced by environmental stimuli. The external environment influences your perception
What is top down processing?
Stimulus processing that is influenced by factors such as individuals past experience and expectations. Background knowldge influences perception
What is modularity?
The assumption that the cognitive system consists of fairly independent or separate modules or processors, each specialised for a certain type of processing
What is mental representation?
The sense in which properties of the outside world (e.g colours, objects) are simulated and interpreted by cognition
What is neural representation?
The way in which properties of the outside manifest themselves in the neural signal (e.g different spiking rates for different stimuli)
What is rate coding (relating to neurons)
Greater rate of neutrons response is used to code information
What is temporal coding?
Pattern of firing determines coding. Greater synchrony of several neutrons is used to code information
What is domain specificity?
-the notion that a given module responds selectively to certain types of stimuli but not others
