Q

Why are there 24 Patterns?

A

Kwon-do is because the founder, Major General Choi Hong Hi, compared to the life of man with a day in the life of the Earth and believed that some people should strive to bequeath a good spiritual legacy to forthcoming generations and in doing so gain immortality.

Therefore, if we can leave something behind for the welfare of mankind, maybe it will be the most important thing to happen in our lives.

Q

Why do we perform patterns?

A

We practise patterns to improve our Tae Kwon-do techniques, to develop sparring techniques, to improve flexibility of movement, master body shifting, develop muscles, balance and breath control. They also enable us to acquire techniques which cannot be obtained from other forms of training.

What is a pattern?

A

A pattern is a set of fundamental movements, mainly defence and attack, set in a logical sequence to deal with one or more imaginary opponents. Patterns are an indication of a student’s progress, a barometer in evaluating an individual’s technique.

21
Q

What is the Tae Kwon-do oath?

A

As a student of Tae Kwon-do, I do solemnly pledge to abide by the rules and regulations of the TKD association, to strive always to be modest, courteous and respectful to all members, in particular to my seniors, to put the art into use only for self-defence or in defence of the weak and never to abuse my knowledge of the Art.

22
Q

If you had to choose a sixth tenet, what would it be and why?

A

Resilience, because to progress through TKD you need resilience so that you can cary on when things don’t quite go your way or you ind something particularly hard.

23
Q

Why is there black edging on a black belt dobok?

A

The piping on a black belt dobok is 3 cm in width and is symbolic of the royal family and members of the aristocratic houses of the Koguryo, Baek Je, and Silla Dynasties. The dobok is sometimes described as consisting of three ‘levels’ the top representing heaven, the belt representing humans and the trousers representing the Earth. The colours of black, blue, and red denote the levels of hierarchy during the Koguryo, Baek Je and Silla Dynasties.

24
Q

Why do you do TKD?

A

To enhance my fitness. Gain confidence and to get away from the stress of the day.

25
Why to you want to become a Black belt?
To prove I can do it, so I can continue to further my TKD knowledge and show that all the hard work I have been putting in has been worth it.
26
How many patterns end in an attack?
5: Chon-ji, Dan Gun, Do San, Toi Gye, and Choong Moo
27
How many patterns contain a backfist strike?
5: Do San, Yul Gok, Joong Gun, Toi Gye and Choong Moo
28
Name 3 patterns that contain a release move
Do San, Joog Gun, Hwa Rang
29
What is the difference between the jump in Yul gok and Toi gye?
The jump in yul gol is for distance - to close the gap between yourself and the opponent. The jump in toi gye is to avoid a sweeping attack from your opponent. This might be in the form of a kick to sweep your legs from under you or attack from a weapon designed to injure your legs.
30
What is the difference between move number 6 in Won Hyo and Hwa Rang?
In Hwa Rang, you slide into position.
31
What are the three kingdoms of Korea?
Silla, Baek Je, Koguryo
32
What is the difference between a strike and a thrust?
A strike is to injure or immobolise an opponent; a thrust is to push away an opponent and to diffuse a potential dangerous and difficult situation. A strike is predominately a circular motion. A thrust is a straight motion.
33
What is the difference between self-discipline and self-control?
My interpretation of self-discipline is always to be polite and courteous to all instructors and fellow students. To set myself targets and to achieve them. To always be on time for training and gradings. My interpretation of self-control is always to be in control of my physical behaviour wherever I am. To be in control of my actions when I'm training in the dojang and when I'm out in public. The difference is one of mind over matter, mental over physical. If your mind and body are disciplined correctly, then you will have self-control.
